2nd Orientation Session Held on AFP Surveillance at BKMC-MTI, Swabi in Collaboration with WHO

The second orientation session was conducted for Consultants, TMOs, TRs, MOs, and Nursing staff from the Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, and Medicine departments of BKMC-MTI, Swabi, in collaboration with WHO Swabi. The session focused on raising awareness and strengthening the capacity for timely reporting and surveillance of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases.

Dr. Mahnoor Fatima, District Surveillance Officer, WHO Swabi, led the session with an informative presentation on the importance of AFP surveillance, timely case reporting, and its vital role in polio eradication. Participants remained actively engaged, particularly during videos illustrating the impact of poliovirus on children.

It was emphasized that any suspected AFP case in children under 15 should be reported within 14 days of diagnosis. The WHO Surveillance Team will promptly follow up, track the case, and collect stool samples for further analysis. Accurate details—such as the patient’s name, contact number, and address are essential for timely response.

The session concluded with remarks from Dr. Khalid Masud, Hospital Director, who encouraged participants to stay vigilant and committed to AFP reporting as part of the national effort to eliminate polio. A Q&A session followed, where all queries were addressed comprehensively.
