Swabi: An awareness seminar about Global Breastfeeding Week 2024 was conducted at Bacha Khan Medical Complex with the support of the Hospital Director BKMC-MTI and Nutrition International.
The event was chaired by Dr. Asif Iqbal, District Child Specialist, and Dr. Haji Gul, Assistant Professor at GKMC/BKMC-MTI, Swabi.
Dr. Asif Iqbal delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of breastfeeding and discouraging bottle feeding. A total of 45 participants, including WMOs, MOs, TMOs, and staff nurses from the Pediatrics and Gynecology departments of BKMC-MTI, attended the seminar.
Dr. Haji Gul highlighted that failure in lactation is a major cause of neonatal mortality and stressed that early initiation of breastfeeding could significantly reduce mortality, morbidity, and even the incidence of breast cancer.
Ms. Lubna Pervez, District Coordinator MNHN from Nutrition International, presented the disadvantages of formula feeding and discussed how healthcare providers can promote better breastfeeding practices.
The seminar concluded with remarks from Dr. Inayatullah, Neonatologist, who urged BKMC-MTI staff to actively promote and protect breastfeeding. The key messages delivered included early breastfeeding within one hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and continued breastfeeding along with complementary feeding for up to two years and beyond.
